REASON FOR LOSS:

On only his third operational flight in Italy was tasked to intercept a formation of U.S. bombers heading up from the heel of Italy to attack targets in the South of France. During the ensuing combat with the four engined bombers Georg Doerffels aircraft was hit and he was forced to bale out of his Fw 190 and it is assumed that he struck the horizontal stabilizer with his head rendering him unconcious. His body was found with an un-opened parachute. Doerffel flew 1004 enemy war flights as Schlachtflieger with the Henschel Hs 123, Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke Wulf Fw 190.
On the 21.08.1941 when Oberleutnant he was awarded the Knights Cross. Georg Doerffel was honoured with a postumous promotion to Oberstleutnant.
