Pilot: Leutnant Johannes Matthiesen 68421/232 Killed (Born 04.07.1921 in Bellig/Schleswig.)
REASON FOR LOSS:
Lt Matthiesen and his wingman took off on a sea reconnaissance mission from Wevelghem, Belgium at 07.33 hours. When 30 km's out over the sea they were spotted by ten RAF Typhoon fighters of No.198 Squadron. Matthiesen and his wingman turned, and made their way back to the coast, The two Focke Wulf's were flying at 200 metres apart, when suddenly three Typhoon's attacked his wingman and shot him down. Lt Matthiesen flew on towards the coast. The Typhoon's had caught up and immediatly attacked the lone Focke Wulf, Matthiesen had no chance and baled out. but was later found dead lying about 200 metrs from the wreckage of his aircraft.
