Pilot:: Oberfeldwebel Wilhelm Mackenstedt 60020/15 Killed (Born 25.01.1917 in Diepholz.)

REASON FOR LOSS:

Oberfeldwebel. Mackenstedt took off with the Staffel to intercept a large formation of B-17 Flying Fortressís (100). During the attack on the bombers, mackenstedt's aircraft was hit by return fire, and caught fire! At a height of 6,000 metres he released his cockpit canopy and prepared for a forced landing. On hitting the ground he was thrown from the cockpit and suffered severe injuries. He was taken to hospital at Arnhem, but sadly died at 20.45 hours on the 1st August 1943.
