Date: 13th March 1941

Time: 8.35.p.m.

Unit: 7 Staffel/Kampfgeschwader 26

Type: Heinkel He 111H-5

Werke/Nr. 3610

Code: 1H + IR

Location: Smokehall Farm, Shipley, Sussex.

Pilot: Unteroffizier Erich Herrmann Killed

Observer: Unteroffizier Franz Calice Killed

Radio/Op: Gefreiter Leo Schmid Killed

Flt/Engineer: Obergefreiter Walter Kallert Killed

REASON FOR LOSS:

This aircraft was shot down by Sgt J. A. Clandillion and Sgt Dodgie in a Beaufighter of No.219 Squadron.

This aircraft approached Shipley from the West, crashed and exploded, scattering wreckage over a wide area. Many incendiary and some H.E, bombs went off; one bomb, probably 500 kg, was found unexploded. It is reported that this aircraft had previously been attacked by a night fighter.
The unit was obtained from documents and is confirmed by one of the two Identity Discs. The aircraft lettering was deduced by the letter L on the W/T tuning book, which was followed by 3610 which was probably the aircraft Works No.
One member of the crew had a permit to go to Paris, valid between 03.03.41 and 19.03.41. The W/T operator had been with the 1. Bordfunker Ausbildungs Kompanie of Luftflottennachrichtenschule 2 at Koeniggraetz from 07.03.40 to 15.08.40, and on the 19.10.40 was at the Grosse Kampffliegerschule 1 at Tutow.(Source: A.I.1.(k) Report No. 87/1941)
