Date: 30th September 1940
Unit: 4 Staffel/Jagdgeschwader 26
Type: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4
Werke/Nr. 1190
Code: 4 + -
Location: Eastdean, W of Eastbourne, Sussex
Pilot: Unteroffizier Horst Perez 60018 Captured wounded
REASON FOR LOSS:
This aircraft was severely damaged in combat with Spitfires during escort sortie mission. Believed that attacked by Sgt D. E. Kingaby of No.92 Squadron. The pilot, Uffz Perez was captured badly injured - reputedly shot and wounded by troops after landing.
A.I.1.(k) Report No.668/1940 States the following; The aircraft flew at 16,000/18,000 feet westward towards Eastbourne, then turned inland towards London. They were supposed to be escorting bombers, but never located them and circled round to the North of Eastbourne. They were intercepted at 28,000 feet and made for the coast. They were intercepted again and in the ensuing dog-fight the engine of this aircraft failed. Apparently there are no shots in the aircraft itself. The pilot made a forced landing with the undercarriage retracted and the aircraft is in good condition. On getting out of his aircraft this pilot was shot at and wounded in the hand and jaw.

Under armed guard, the yellow-nosed Messerschmitt Bf 109E rests in a field near Eastdean, Sussex (via Ellis)
