REASON FOR LOSS:
Believed shot down by Sgt J. N. Glendinning in a Spitfire of No.74 Squadron.
This aircraft was flying as Rottenhund, when they were attacked from above and behind by Spitfires. The aircraft was hit twice in the cabin and caught fire slightly. The pilot tried to bale out, but the cockpit cover had jammed. Shortly afterwards he was caught by a full blast of fire from one of the fighters and the aircraft caught fire properly and eventually the pilot was able to bale out. The aircraft crashed into the sea and the pilot came down on land.
Amongst his effects was a flight order dated 27.10.40 ordering him to take the Me 109 Werks No.4154 from Romorantin to Beaumont-le- Roger.
Another order dated 31.10.40, was for a flight from Octeville to Beamont-le-Roger.
The pilot, who had the identity disc of Fl.A.R.72 was at the Ergaenzungs Jagdgruppe, Merseburg, on 24.08.40. There is evidence that he subsequently went to Rouen, as he visited certain establishments on the nights of the 27.09.40, 02.10.40 (twice), 03.11.40 and 13.11.40.
